DIY - Floor Length Mirror
May 6, 2020HOW TO CREATE A FLOOR LENGTH MIRROR - UNDER BUDGET - RH INSPIRED!
We know how gold has made a big comeback in interior design these last few years and how trendy it has become. For us, it is our primary focus when it comes to design and is the influence behind our company’s name. Oro in Latin translates to Gold and is the foundation of all our designs and inspiration. Lately, many people have chosen this accent colour in their homes so what’s better than having that as a grand accent mirror in a space!
Restoration Hardware has been infamous for carrying these grand mirrors and we all love them - but realistically, can all of us afford one? The answer is most likely no (sadly) which is why we put together this quick DIY project to show you all how its done on a budget.
We have created an easy step by step transformation that will blow your mind!
STEP 1: THE SHOPPING LIST
- Find a cheap mirror on Kijiji. This mirror that we found and purchased is from Kijiji which cost us only $30, we didn’t even have to travel far to pick to up either which was also a plus. If you can’t find a cheap re-sale, Home Sense (Home Goods for USA) is a great alternative for great deals and steals - you might even own a mirror in your home that you might want to transform!
- Then purchase the spray paint in Antique Brass from The Home Depot - https://www.homedepot.ca/product/rust-oleum-universal-metallic-antique-brass-312g/1000739179
- You also need an appliqués which we also got at The Home Depot. There are a couple styles to choose from but we chose this one - https://www.homedepot.ca/product/ornamental-mouldings-embossed-acanthus-wood-ornament-3-1-2-x-16-11-16-1-piece-per-card/1000153146
- Adhesive glue from The Home Depot - https://www.homedepot.ca/product/lepage-express-quick-dry-wood-glue-150ml/1000708191
Total Cost After Tax: $64.24
STEP 2: THE HOW TO
- Make sure to protect the space you’ll be spray painting with drop cloths or newspaper for easy clean up.
- Make sure to also cover or line the mirror before spraying the frame/edges to avoid staining the mirror itself.
- After spray painting both the appliqué and the mirror, we let them dry overnight. It will take a few coats to get the desired coverage.
- Next day - once everything is completely dry, you can go ahead and adhere the appliqué to the mirror with the wood glue (make sure you do this outside because the smell can be harmful). Let this set overnight again.
THE FINAL REVEAL
For under $70, we’ve created a one of a kind piece that fits any space that can be hung or leaned up against the wall. The appliqué is what makes the mirror so special and for dare I say an ‘expensive’ look. We’ve created it to be a minimalist look but if you want to add more impact, there are other appliqués from The Home Depot that can be added to the edges of the mirror for a more dramatic look.
Adding the perfect accent colours such as white and green together with gold can give your space such a chic look that we just love!
