How To Select The Right Paint Colour
February 21, 2020THE PERFECT PALETTE
Trying to choose the right colour for your home can be very daunting for some people. Have you ever walked into a paint store or hardware store and ever wondered how there could be so many colours to choose from? There are so many options and how can you be sure you’ve selected the ‘perfect’ one? Choosing the right interior paint can revive your home and also add resale value in future. But before doing so, understanding colour is incredibly valuable. As a certified design specialist, my team and I have mastered the expertise and can offer our clients the outmost professional opinion.
UNDERSTANDING COLOUR THEORY
Colour is everywhere and every colour emits and evokes a mood and a feeling. The colour wheel was invented in 1666 by Sir Isaac Newton. Within the colour wheel are:
- Primary colours
- Secondary colours
- Tertiary colours
From those three colour spectrums, there are colour combinations that can be formed. They are:
- Complimentary
- Monochromatic
- Analogus
- Triadic
- Tetradic
Warm colours bring energy while cool colours bring serenity. Warm colours are red, orange, and yellow. Cool colours are green, blue, and purple. Shades, tints and tones are created by adding black, or white to a base hue. This is what adds richness to colours.
* Fun fact: Men and women both see colour differently. There are 8% of men that are colour blind, 0.4% of females, and approximately 3 million colour blind people in the world which is about 4.5% of the entire population.
FINDING COLOUR INSPIRATION
Inspiration can come from anywhere; look around you. It could be a childhood memory, a place you once traveled to or something as simple as a piece of art or an accessory you might have in your home. These photos are from recent travels I’ve taken over the years. I love finding inspiration every corner I turn and every destination I’ve travelled to. Colour brings so much life into everything around us.
PAINT FINISHES
Once you’ve narrowed down your choices and have chosen your paint colour, then comes choosing your finish. There are different degrees of finishes. They are:
- High-gloss
- Semi-gloss
- Satin
- Eggshell
- Flat/Matte
Each finish is specialized for different low and high traffic areas.
