Wallpaper has made a BIG comeback and evolved in the last decade when it comes to interior design. It was popular during the Colonial times and lost its popularity in the 1900s. Wallpaper application has dramatically changed making it easier and more pliable that even the average home owner can now apply without the help of a professional. There are so many designs, textures and patterns to now choose from, and is more unique than paint. It can really transform any space; it has become modern art.
The different types of wallpaper rolls are:
- Paper (the original - most difficult to strip)
- Embossed (raised pattern on paper or vinyl)
- Non-woven (synthetic and paper fibres glued together)
- Vinyl (plastic laminated to fabric - ideal for hallways and kitchens)
- Metallic/foil (metallized film laminated onto paper)
- Textured (raised designed laminated onto paper)
- Flocked (velvet like texture- one of the most expensive)
- Mylar (printed paper with polyester film - easiest to remove)
WHY USE WALLPAPER?
Wallpaper is a great way to accent a wall or a room with stylish designs. Paint will chip overtime and endure everyday wear and tear. When wallpaper gets dirty, its as simple as wiping it off versus paint, wiping it down will take the finish off and may leave unwanted spots. Longterm, wallpaper withstands traditional paint saving you money in the long run. Another good use for wallpaper is for personalizing a temporary home and rentals.
NEW AGE DESIGNS
New designs come in removable decal options. A favourite of mine is Rocky Mountain Decals. They offer many great options of decals and removable wallpaper that leave no mess or longterm damage to your walls. They have so many designs to beautify your walls and spaces. Here are some of my personal favourites.
FACT: Wallpaper is normally sold in rolls. American wallpaper is 27 inches (69 cm) in width and 27 feet (8.2 m) in length, while European wallpaper 21.5 inches wide and 33 feet (10 m) in length.
